Clean Your Skin: Take a nice long shower to prepare your skin to accept the tan. Cleanse your face, removing off all of your makeup and then wash off any deodorants or perfumes. Be sure not to reapply makeup or put jewelry on before a tan once you step out of the shower.
Exfoliate: Make sure to exfoliate your skin before heading over to your session. Exfoliating will eliminate dead skin cells and unclog pores. It will also ensure you end up with a more even skin tone, which is key to simulating a natural tan. You can exfoliate by scrubbing your skin in the shower with a loofah and using an exfoliating body wash. Another option outside of the shower is dry skin brushing. You can do this by using a hairbrush to make long strokes on your body in the direction of your heart. On top of eliminating dead skins cells, this method has also been shown to help reduce the appearance of cellulite.
Moisturize: Although you don’t need to be shy about moisturizing before tanning, do ensure that you use an oil-free moisturizer. Oil-infused moisturizer can create a barrier over the skin when tanning. That being said, it is essential to keep your skin hydrated so it will absorb the tan better. Don’t forget to moisturize your lips with lip balm.
